CPLT 203: First Paper

Due Friday, February 7, submitted by email by beginning of class
Times New Roman, 12 pt. font
3 pages, double spaced
MLA style citation

We have now acquainted ourselves with the most popular authors of nonsense poetry in the 19th century. We have also written our own examples of nonsense. In each of these examples, we discussed the particular ways that nonsense is defined and produced, with a special emphasis on the role of language. In a three-page paper, examine the language of nonsense, using examples from Lewis Carroll, Edward Lear and one of your peers’ nonsense posts. Make a clear and specific argument based on an issue in common in each of these texts, and use examples to illustrate how they relate to this issue. Emphasize points of overlap and points of divergence, and read the examples you choose very closely. Close reading should be the meat of the paper, and I will have high expectations for the level of detail with which you pursue your analysis. I encourage you to use material from your blog replies, with the expectation that they will be revised and integrated into a larger argument and not simply copied and pasted. Please contact me with any questions - I am available to meet and discuss ideas, and we will be discussing the expectations for the paper in class, over the coming weeks.
